High Definition Earth Viewing Experiment (HDEVE) (2018)
Part of the working group with Emil Uuttu
HDEVE is the latest collaboration between video artist Ilmari Karhu and dramatist Emil Uuttu. They are interested in the difference between what we know and what we see.
The performance is named after NASA's experiment, the almost identically named High Definition Earth Viewing Experiment, a live video feed transmitted from the International Space Station (ISS). Video images of the Earth let us observe distance, scale and subjects. From a distance, things may seem clear and definite, but from up close they are blurry.
HDEVE experientializes the problematics of distance and accuracy. HDEVE explores whether our relationship to our home planet can be deepened by observing the Earth from a distance. During the performance, viewers perceive themselves as seen from far off in space.
The performance uses material from historical archives as well as video, internet and article sources.
